A real verb in position one
Recruiters scan the first two words of every line. “Responsible for” tells them what you were assigned; “Rearchitected” tells them what you did.
At least one number
An unquantified claim reads as an opinion. A single figure turns the same sentence into evidence, and it is the fastest fix on this list.
An outcome, not an activity
Finish the thought. What changed because you did the work — revenue, latency, hours, churn, headcount, risk?
Twelve to twenty-four words
Long bullets get skimmed and short ones carry no scope. The tight middle is where every word earns its place.
No filler, no clichés, no passive voice
“Successfully utilized various tools” says nothing that “used tools” does not. Cutting the padding makes room for the number.
Most bullets people paste in score between 20 and 35. The rewrite alone typically lands in the 60s. Adding one honest number is what pushes a line past 90.

What makes a resume bullet point strong?+
Four things, in order: a specific past-tense action verb at the front, the scope of what you touched, a number, and the outcome that number moved. A bullet with all four survives a six-second scan. A bullet with none of them reads like a job description.
How do I quantify a bullet when I never tracked metrics?+
Estimate honestly and be ready to explain the estimate in the interview. Team size, hours saved per week, number of customers, tickets handled, percentage reduction, budget owned, and how often you did a task are all legitimate numbers, and most people already know them roughly. Why is “responsible for” bad on a resume?+
It describes an assignment rather than an accomplishment. Anyone holding the title was responsible for the same things, so the phrase carries no signal and burns two of the words a recruiter actually reads.
How many bullet points should each job have?+
Three to five for recent and relevant roles, one to three for older ones. Depth beats breadth: five sharp bullets outperform ten vague ones, and cutting the weakest lines usually raises the average more than adding new ones.
Are these rewrites ATS-friendly?+
